Compiler's Note

Over the past few decades we have witnessed growing interest in masculinities and men’s studies. This bibliography was conceived as an exploratory tool for boyhood studies as an emergent field of anthropological, sociological and historical inquiry. It is part of a larger project on the topic that includes a new peer-reviewed journal, THYMOS: Journal of Boyhood Studies.

Boyhood studies is an emerging international area of scholarly work (Pattman, Frosh & Phoenix, 1998; Sørensen, 1999). As a field of scholarly work it is located at the intersection of several established disciplines, including men’s studies, feminist studies, queer studies, and “age studies” (Gullette, 2000). Scholars have begun examining how boyhoods are modeled, reproduced, reinvented, managed, negotiated, regulated, and articulated in terms of race, political hierarchy, territoriality, gender hegemony, and rituals of manhood. Ethnographers have pointed out the interplay and tensions among private, public, and transcendental images and performances of boyhood. Notable and influential contributors to this theme include, among many others, Mary Kehily, Mairtin Mac an Ghaill, Emma Renold, James W. Messerschmidt, Gary Alan Fine, Debbie Epstein, Peter Redman, Amanda Keddie, Christine Skelton, Barrie Thorne, Wayne Martino, Gilbert Herdt, Michael Bamberg, Neill Korobov, and Jay Mechling.

In this bibliography I have limited the number of psychoanalytic contributions referenced. I have also not included much material on non-Western communities, which are comprehensively referenced in Janssen (2003, I, II; 2005). The bibliography has obviously benefitted from this bibliographic effort but is also indebted to sections of Michael Flood's Men's Bibliography: A Comprehensive Bibliography of Writing on Men, Masculinities, Gender, and Sexualities and Perry Nodelman's online Bibliography of Children's Literature Criticism. No claim of exhaustiveness is made. Suggestions are welcomed: diederikjanssen@gmail.com.
